ESS Tuning Directflash Software

Anyone have experience with this?

Worth the $1,000? Is this something that you can do yourself (seems like it) or should you pay a shop to do it for you?

http://www.esstuning.com/products/E9...-Software.html

Sounds like a bold claim to me:

"Typical performance increase is +15-20hp and 10-15ft/lbs of torque with software alone."

Yes you can do it yourself with the flash loader (just follow the instructions)

It is not a bold claim, check other tuners websites and they will claim the same or more...

Question is at what cost? I may not be a SME on this but I always wonder if the benefit outweighs the cost (not necessarily monetary). Would love to get people's opinion on pros. and cons.

Cost/benefit is subjective. To me, the greatest "cost" is risk of a voided warranty. If there was no risk in this, then the $1,000 would definitely be worth the gains for me. Even with the warranty risk, it is worth it to a lot of people.

I bought the direct flash about a month ago. Super easy install and I'm very happy with it. You can def feel the difference and really feel the pull when you hit the M button. Its no supercharger but very noticeable difference and perfect for what I wanted....

So would this void the warranty?

Yes if BMW can show the flash caused the engine problem. But, even if they can't prove it, I can promise they will still try to deny warranty on engine issues if they find you did it. That would be a very difficult uphill fight.

There is no "Placebo" effect. I'm simply stating that I drove the car around hard in "M" and not in "M" before the install. Then I stopped, installed the tune and drove around again and could definitly feel the difference....

I'm just hoping that if something did happen, I would flash back to stock, praying that they would not be able to find out that the ECU was messed withl.. Who knows, I'm sure they have fancy computers that can find out anything...

The MDM changes the conservative traction and stability control thresholds to more aggressive thresholds so any slight gain in power obtained from the tune will be more noticeable when pressing the M button

Yeah, the whole mod thing is a bit worrisome from a warranty perspective. In any event, I drive an '08 and the warranty is set to expire in 6 mos or so. Once it's finished, let the modding begin (maybe, hehe - the car seems fast as hell as is; how much more do I really need?)
