I've got a set, but they're not very near the sensor yet. They've got 24K street miles on them.

Let me know

I have fronts that are pretty close to the sensor. However....I'm not sure how much you're willing to buy them for? And shipping will cost a slight bit too. Gotta tempt me with an offer lol otherwise it wouldn't be worthwhile for me to take the pads out

edit: yeah on second thought...too much hassle. If you were local, I'd help you out though! Sorry, and good luck!

I think he's looking to get new pads from a warranty claim?

Yeah, I'm well aware of what his intentions are. They're the exact same intentions I had several months ago prior to my warranty expiration. I, however was not so lucky in finding worn-down brake pads. And the stealershit also failed on me in the end by not giving me ANYTHING

Yes, you are correct. My rotors are well below minimum thickness, but the dealerships will not do anything until pads are toast as well. Not looking to get into a discussion on the ethics behind this, just trying to find some worn pads.

Elerner61: any idea how much is left on the pads?

Damn BMW with their lame restrictions
My front rotors were also worn down, but the pads were @ 5mm thickness as opposed to the 3mm required

Um, when my rotors were out of spec, both the rotors and pad were replaced under warranty. Your dealership should not be trying to screw you out of changing the rotors. This is a safety issue. Dished rotors may crack under heat.

Is it written anywhere that the pads have to be low for them to service other parts of the brakes? Maybe you should go to another dealer. Perhaps you could exaggerate a bit and say that there is a lot of vibration under hard deceleration.

Both dealers I've tried have responded the same way. I believe it might be written somewhere if I remember correctly. It is also extremely difficult to find a dealer I would even trust to work on my car in the Houston area.

I can't find the thread, but there was a change to "free maintenance" summer of 2010 (or thereabouts) if I recall correctly. IIRC, we've seen where they'll eagerly change out pads at inspection well before the 3mm limit.

This policy left me with no choice but to buy new front rotors since I was well below spec on that front, planning on tracking my car (which I did do after I had the rotors replaced, not before), and had 80% of the pads left. There's no way at 30K miles the pads hadn't been replaced at Inspection around 24K miles--that effectively forced me to shell out of pocket for the rotors.

Now, when it comes to actual warranty coverage I have nothing but good things to say. I've never had an issue on the warranty front, and I've had several things (headlight, diff leak, shift knob, a couple other minor things) replaced or fixed under warranty. But the maintenance program leaves a lot to be desired on the brake front given changes and how it's set up. However, if I have to pick (maintenance or warranty) I'll take BMW's warranty approach over Porsche's any day of the week.

Yes, it is documented under a more "recent" amendment to the BMW "free maintenance" plan
In it, they clearly state that a stealershit may not be reimbursed by BMW NA if they decide to honor a customer's brake pads prior to the required 3mm minimum thickness before replacement. This is why a lot of stealershits are afraid of not getting paid, and so they turn you away even if your rotors are ready to be swapped out...
Lame, I know

Sigh, I'll eventually get new front rotors out of pocket. For now though, since I'm not planning any track days in the near future, I'll just wear my current fronts down until I get that "brembo squeal"
And when people ask, "hey, why are your brakes squeaking?"
I'll answer with: "because RACECAR !"

Maybe I can offer to pay for the pads and see what they say. I'm planning a track day in about a month and do not want to run with the rotors at or below minimum thickness.

Worth a try, and I totally understand why you wouldn't want to run below the minimum thickness (I didn't either).
