With the rear seats folded down, you can easily fit 1 road bike in the trunk/back seats provided you can take the front wheel off. There is room to put that on top of the bike in the trunk.

You can easily fit the road bike in the back, I fit my Trek 6000 mountain bike in the back of my 1er all the time! I don't care for the bike rack look, but that's just my taste!

I regularly shoehorn my 63cm Cannondale CAAD 9 in the trunk with the seats up (two child seats take priority in there). I had to buy a Salsa quick-release seatpost clamp to do it, but now with both wheels off and the seat/seatpost out, it just fits. It takes two extra seconds to pop the seat out and for me it's worth it to have my bike out of sight and dry. The trunk closes fine and nothing is smashed. Unlesss you're over 6'4" like me, I would think you can find a way that works for you. Here is my method:
With everything off, align the bike drive side up and top tube toward the front of the car --> angle the r. der. into the pocket just behind the driver's side (U.S.) rear wheel --> turn the bars over the top tube and guide the handlebar in on the passenger side --> push the bike forward until the fork clears the trunk lid. The drivetrain should be safely out of the way already if you follow those steps (watch the pedals). Place the wheels on top and the seat on the side and close the trunk.
