Help! Speeding Violation... Nyc

Speed in zone 31+...

I was doing 61 in 30 zone...

Personal appearance required...

How many points I have to expect?
Any chance of beating this this thing?
Is it worth to lawyer up?

Please chime in!

You might have to go to driving school or get your license suspended. Is your driving record clean. If yes, you might get away with a big ticket, if not, re-read the second post (the one from SehrSchnell)...

Hey man i just got out of that same exact situation last year and nearly lost my license because of it. It is 8 points AND you must be enrolled in the 2 year driver assesment program which is 400$ a year. I was lawyer'ed up and that is the ONLY reason i did not loose my license.

NY doesn't f*k around when it comes to speeders from the sounds of it.

I'm still trying to get legal to drive in that state 4 years later....

Good luck!

I can only hope you are allowed to post from Jail so we know what happened. 61 in a 30 zone, and you wonder why M3s get a bad name. I would be embarassed to admit this.

As did I - although it was more like 3 years ago on the West Side Highway. The ticket was something like 74 in a 45 I think. The total fines with the nonsense driver assessment were around $700-800 over 3 years. I lawyered up and got lucky, the cop showed up to the hearing but he'd lost his copy of the ticket and his notes. When my case was called, all three of us (my lawyer, the cop and I) approached the bench, cop said he had lost his copy of the ticket and asked if he could take a look at mine. I asked my lawyer and the judge if I needed to let him see it - they both said no. I said "no you may not" and the cop asked to dismiss the charges. Took 20 seconds and I was out of there with no points, no fines, nothing. But I did get lucky.

Though it's probably a moot point, why were you driving so fast in a 30 zone?

Good luck man. I got 2 tickets last year and my lawyer postponed both until they couldn't. I didn't luck out with the one in Queens as the cop was fully prepared and got hit with points and the assessment fee. Unfortunately no plea bargaining in NYC courts. Still have one more for Brooklyn. The good thing is since they had postponed the case so long, my points will go away by May anyway since points only hold 18 months after the date of violation, not conviction. Defensive Driving will also help bring the points down. I drive like a granny around town now thanks to these tickets. Cops are picking better hiding spots these days, especially the BQE on that patch of road between the Manhattan Bridge and Williamsburgh Bridge. Another spot to watch out for is the Whitestone Expy both directions, they are out there a lot more.

Get a lawyer. I got a 50 in a 35 West Side downtown. Ultimately ended up with a few points. I really wanted to fight it, I was not only in traffic at a stop light when he stopped me, it was around 5:30 and there was no way anyone was going 50, it was crazy. I said that to to LEO, he pretty much ignored me and gave me the ticket then proceded to nab someone else. I wasn't pleased.

I don't want a radar in my car unless they have one that beeps like a Gundam's warning HUD. I just drive with the flow of traffic in the middle lane nowadays making sure someone is just ahead of me and constantly scan for cops.
