oil change

Hi guys,
My friend and I are thinking of dropping the oil mid bmw service. I am just confirming that the N54 needs 6.5 litres after an oil and filter change. I have read somewhere that you put in 6 litres then top it up in 0.25litre amounts till it reads full correct?

Also Does anybody know what brand and weight of oil they use @ bmw , i just wanted to put the factory stuff back in .

Cheers
Nik

6.5L is correct, you can always measure how much comes out of it as well.

BMW use a fully synthetic Castrol 5w-30 LL01 approved.

This basically means you should use Castrol Edge Sport or the newly released Castrol Edge Sport Titanium.
You can also use Mobil 1, or any other fully synthetic oil with a 5w-30 rating and LL01 approval if you wish.

If you need an oem oil filter I can sell you one for $19 posted

+ 1 on above comments. Oil brand depends on dealership too.

Cause it's in QLD. They seem to do things a little different there.

Use either Castrol 5W30 or there 0W40.
You can also use Mobile 1 0W40.

Just use whatever's on sale at K-Mart. All oils are the same. And there's no need to change oil more often than the specified 25K.

Someone is going to take you seriously one day and follow your advice.

Unless you plan on keeping the car for 20+ years I would follow his advice also.

When was the last time you saw engine damage from not renewing your oil? I can pretty much guarantee the car will fall apart before the engine dies if you just service it as recommended.

Some of us "gear heads" prefer to change our oil more than what BMW says to. To my thinking... new oil is the best oil!

And... I would only use an oil approved by BMW(full synthetic). That means: BMW long life 1 (LL1) with API: SM / CF, ACEA C2, C3 in any of these grades: 0w30, 0w40, 5w30 or 5w40. The most important thing is to use an oil with BMW LL1 rating.

Winter, Mobil 1 Gold 0w40
Summer, Penrite 5w50

Both are fully synthetic and carry LL01 approval.

Only AFTER you've cooked your chips. Gee Matt, you don't want to waste good oil!

heh

I have some lovely Sichuan pepper infused oil the mother in-law made when she was here, maybe that'd give me another 100kW ATW?

I swear you have used this joke before!

Though it sounds like an awesome oil to cook with, any recipes?

Probably, I love the oil and I love an old joke!

I'd use it with a good homestyle Mapo doufu.

oil viscosity chart

A lot of people get hung up on oil viscosity - I really feel it is a moot point when using a "full synthetic" motor oils. It would be nice if BMW gave us a chart of oil viscosity vs temp. But I found this one from Mercedes Benz. Just look at how well a 0w40 oil works.

I use a 0w40 engine oil here in Germany all year round. We have weather from -20' C to about 33' C in the summer time(although on most summer days we have maybe 28' C).
