I am boycotting Esso
Went to an Esso gas station last week and filled up. Pressed the "91 octane" button, and put about 45 litres in. Then when I get home, I look at my receipt and noticed that I was charged for 87 octane gas.
So either I received 91 octane and was charged for 87, or they didn't have any 91 and automatically put me onto 87! If it's the latter (which I suspect), I'm pissed! There was no sign that said "No 91 available". And if there wasn't any 91 available, it shouldn't let you pump 87 automatically. I'm not sure what to do right now. Is my engine gonna be okay? I've thought about siphoning it out, but I think that's a bit extreme. I shot off a pretty strongly worded email to Esso customer service, and I will no longer be buying gas there. I'm gonna stick with either Petro-Canada, Sunoco, or Shell. |

If you want to join the "resistance" and not support Esso, dont get gas from Exxon (Esso is Exxon's international brand name)...

Most people buy cheap gas and it almost always runs out first. Since Esso is not able to offer the 87 octane crap, they sell the 89 and 91 octane at 87 octane prices.....
You should be thanking Esso.

I'll join in and boycott Exxon Mobil and it's subsidiaries (including Esso). It's actually easy to do since I've bought into the whole Top Tier marketing thing and only purchase from Top Tier retailers. If it's good enough for BMW to set the standard, who am I to argue with them.
Top Tier info and retailers found here http://www.toptiergas.com/index.html

Sounds like you're all willing to take the huge effort to not buy gas from a place you already don't buy gas from. Thanks! I guess I can always count on my fellow members to support me. T Bone, what makes you think that I actually got 91? Even if they did run out of 87, they would still charge me the 91 octane price would they not? |

I have been to Esso twice over the past 2 years where they ran out of 87 and offered the 91 at the 87 pricing. If they just allowed people to run 87 octane, they would run into product liability issues. So if you are confident you used the right nozzle and pressed the right selector button, you just got a good deal because they ran out of 87. If you are paranoid, don't go full throttle for half a tank and then get some Sunoco 94 to mix up the gas in the tank....but if you are confident in your nozzle choice, I am almost sure you came out ahead.

Just out of curiosity, how did you know that you really were getting 91 for the 87 price? Is that what they told you? |

That's why I'm less confident with my situation 'cause the place I filled at was also like that: one nozzle, 3 buttons. |

takedown: Gas treatment is an additive you can pick up just about anywhere: NAPA; Automax; whatever local carparts store you have. It's cheap and extra insurance.
Coulda-shoulda-woulda...why not be safe, assume you got garbage gas and throw in an additive - problem solved. I don't see the dilema. |

TBone, my wheels are almost the same color as yours at the end of the week. Then I wash them and they're silver again.
Gorgeous car. Wheels look great on it!
