Service Campaign & "Dancing" Windows
So I took my 2011 Z in for its 15k service (Oil/Brake Fluid/Mirco-Filter change). While there, I asked them to correct the "Dancing Windows" issue... for the second time. (the first time they simply re-calibrated the windows)
Anyway, they told me that there was a service campaign (reprogramming) on the car and that there was, indeed a TSB on the windows that required additional programming. See attached work order description. 1) Can anyone tell me about the "Open Campaign"... my guess is that it is simply a software update, but I though I'd ask. 2) Also, I understood that the "Fix" for Dancing windows involved adding a relay that adjusted the window speeds so that the main windows closed slightly later than the rear quarter windows. I mentioned this and the Service Advisor said that he was aware of the problem but only knew of the window programming bulletin listed on the work order (SI B51 10 11). Has anyone else heard of this? Apologies in advance if either question has been previously answered. Note: Other than the pesky window issue (and crappy RFTs)... this car has been a dream. Absolutely no issues and a joy to drive. I've rescheduled the "programming" fixes for next week when a loaner was available.

My 2011 was fixed by installing the relay you mentioned. When I received my 2012 Z4, it came from the factory with staggered window closing, so the relay must be factory-installed now. I'm not aware of this campaign, but I will say that I had a dancing window problem even with the 2012, but it lasted only for a couple of weeks and I haven't seen it recur in about 2 months.

Thanks Jparnes1,
I guess we'll just have to see if the windows stop "dancing" after next week's re-programming. As for the "Open Campaign," I'm assuming it's just an update. It would be a nice surprise if Service Advisors could actually "advise" about the service being performed. Then again, at my local dealer, I never see the same one twice. Those poor guys must turnover faster than pancakes at an IHOP. I don't even know why they bother printing business cards.

Yep mines recently had the relay (or junction box they called it) fitted to cure this. I never thought I'd be so happy to have it just close windows properly!

In performing the "Junction Box" fix, did the dealer reference a "service bulletin" on the work order? (ex: SIB 51 10 11) If the windows are still "dancing" after my re-programing, I'd like to reference the proper TSB# (and hold their hands to the correct solution). Thanks!

Just had mine fixed a few weeks ago. The TSB referenced was 511011. Writeup by the technician; "I checked the JBE hardware number and found number 2 is installed and vehicle needs JBE3 as per bulletin 511011. I replaced the JBE with JBE3 and performed coding session."
The rear windows now close AFTER the front windows and I have not had the problem since the repair. |

Happened to me with the key fob yesterday. Figured a sensor was seeing or feeling something so the passenger window went all the way back down. Opened/shut the doors and trunk and then it was fine. Glad to know there is actually an issue with this.
