Ultimate Hide Away Front Plate Setup !
So I finally decided to set up a nice hide away front plate. I was exhausted with the amount of tickets I was receiving from NYS cops and didn't want to go the tow hook route. I purchased a hide away plate from http://www.hidetheplate.com/ which took a month to get here. Not exactly sure why... but anyhow it finally arrived last week.
I ended up removing the front bumper(using DIY on here) which by chance was a breeze!!!! I am so happy with the way BMW setup this front bumper. I drilled two holes under the main "mouth" of the bumper for the bracket to mount on and used the supplied hardware to mount it properly. As of right now it rests on the intercooler(which is aftermarket) but with further tweaking it could sit just above it. This really didn't bother me. I used a dremel to cut out the mesh just enough to let the plate get through. I opted for a more hidden look which in return made the plate not sit perfectly flush when in its upright position. This looks just fine for me since its almost perfect and in turn the bracket doesn't stick out and is much more hidden. I used some rubber tape(electrical tape) on the back of the plate bracket to insure it doesn't scratch the bumper when its in the upright postion also. Any questions feel free to ask here! I am sure this could work on the 1M also..

That looks pretty good. Did you get the manual or motorized one?

I went with the manual version since i will be keeping the plate visible most of the time. I feel like the motorized one would fail overtime or get eaten alive in the winter by salt and such. It's also super easy to retract by hand

Been dealing with No Front Plate tickets as well (I'm from NY), and haven't been to sure which route to go. I may consider this one... Are you going to drive with the plate showing? If so, when are you going to tuck it back in? Just for meets?

At least you have the clean looking white/navy blue plates!!! I have the mustard yellow new plates they're so ugly that I bear the pain of paying No Front Plate tickets

The tow hook mount is nice, but it never stays parallel to the rest of the car and if you happen to go through any sort of automatic car wash, not only does it get moved around but the whole thing will likely bend and will be difficult to straighten out. Ask me how i know. Twice.
Just picked up "ilikebmxbikes"s one he had for sale. Lets hope i can take that bumper off quickly! |

I've been running without a plate in CT (where it's required). One month with the car and so far so good. But this may be the way to go. I like the motorized option...
