Opinions Wanted - EDC Malfunction
Guys,
I got an EDC malfunction warning light and the dealer quoted $1,100 to replace the control module. Without replacing the module, the suspension remains in the stiffest setting, which I don't mind at all. I plan to get the F80 M3/M4 next year and intend to convert The E92 into a track car. This plan is certainly not set in stone. So, here are my choices: 1) Spend $1100 and replace the module. I can afford to do this, but wonder if it would make sense if I plan to upgrade the system soon anyway. 2) Spend $X to replace the stock EDC system with a coilover system immediately. 3) Drive as is and wait till F80 M3's launch to decide. As per my knowledge, aside from being in the stiffest setting, there is no drawback to leaving the system as is. I appreciate your inputs. Thank you. |

Are you positive it's not just a loose plug? I had the dealer replace an EDC module but it turned out one of the front plugs on the top of the shock was just loose. Do you have lowering springs? It's common for the plugs to easily come loose in the front after a lowering spring install.
If it is a module failure then I would not hesitate to spend the money on a coilover upgrade.

My car has had two EDC module failures this year. BMW NA picked up the cost on the first one, just two months out of warranty. Now, it has failed again. I suppose they are paying once more.....
For the record, this time, the car's power would randomly shut 100% off after you turn the car off. After sitting for a while, you woudl get power back. Only happens after driving, never when cold. So, a bad EDC module can have bad repercussions! Something is wrong. It will be interesting to see what BMW says.

I'd go with 1, 2, or 3 depending on that little voice talking to you. No rush, sleep on it, you'll know what you want to do. Sorry, not much help but my best advice.

Make sure you try unplugging both EDC connectors (L&R) and plugging them back in to ensure anything that's blocking the connection is cleared away. Sounds like you looked but didn't try to cycle out the plugs. If it still is an issue even after cycling, then any of your options above seem good.

I had an EDC module go out on one of my M3's, but luckily I was still under warranty. If you're out of warranty, got with option #2.
