Rear Seat Delete Vert

Well I noticed no one has done a rear seat delete for a vert so i decided i should do one. Here is what I did and the final result. I feel as if it turned out pretty well.

First I took the rear seat and ski bag out. I also read somewhere that you couldn't remove the ski bag, well you can.

I then made a template out of cardboard

I couldn't take the aluminum look of the factory roll bars so I painted them black.

Next step was to transfer the template to plywood

Now time to wrap with carpet

And the finished product

Looks good man! Next step should be a solid rollhoop/belt mounting bar. HPDEs here you come!

I will end up making my own roll bar, It will be very hard with the factory roll bars. There is a lot more with the vert compared to the coupe than i thought

Why? All that work for a few pounds?

Rear seat was useless. The main reason is because no one does anything for verts so i try to be the one to do so

I'm a fan of rear seat deletes, but for the vert it really does just look out of place in my eyes.

I think it would possibly look better if you were to build it out a little bit more and possibly use the extra space for something- speakers, covered storage, i really don't know, but right now it looks like felt seats rather than leather seats.

I dunno.

No one does this mod to a vert because our cars don't have the performance of a comparable coupe. Its typically done for weight saving. It might be cool if you like a lot of bass and wanted to make a kick ass subwoofer enclosure. It reminds me of when a window is broken and you put plywood over it until it can be replaced. Not trying to be a hater...just not feeling it.

So you prefer the huge pas thru in the coupe because i know a lot of people don't like that look and make a similar panel to cover the hole

Our cars are heavier and less rigid than the coupe.

On the margins yes, the enclosed coupe will obviously be more rigid and handle better on turn in and exit….But the E88 is pretty strong for a ‘vert, I think it would be asinine to argue that performance/weight saving mods are somehow less useful on our car. Bottom line is OP just lowered the center of gravity further, and dropped a good deal of weight. Weight savings are weight savings, regardless of the starting point the delta is the same. Well done

Youve clearly never driven your car toe to toe with a coupe...we keep up just fine.

When I had my rear seats out I thought about doing a rollbar similar to the old TC Klein car. But instead of mounting it to the wheel wells, mount it to the hardpoint for the X bar.

The rear seat in a 1-series convertible may be "useless" to some, but certainly not to me. That, and when the time comes to trade/sell, having the rear seat ripped out certainly isn't going to appeal to a wide audience of buyers. To each their own...

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I applaud the OP's effort and his willingness to post it here.

As a 135i owner I can think of at least 5 mods that would enhance the performance of the car without destroying the interior( even if it can be restored). If all those mods were done and I still wanted some weight saving then I would consider this. The cars specs say a coupe will perform better but if you think you can go toe to toe with a coupe who am I to say no.

The seats bolt right back in. It's not a big deal.

Makes zero difference to me - unless you're going to track the car and install a rollcage/rollbar, I cannot fathom why anyone would want to do this. And I don't really care to hear any explanations, just expressing my opinion.
