SCANS - NZ Autocar compares X5 M50D to Range Rover Sport Supercharged

A very unusual comparison for 2 SUV with similar real world performance and size, but with very different technical solutions (and fuel consumption). Of course the M50D is not available in North America, which IMO is a shame... Also about the pricing of these models, it's surreal even more so here in AUS than NZ and of course nothing like in NA...

IMO this is a pointless comparison!
Why not do this next to the current X5M or wait for the new X5M is available?

Because X5M would've smoked RRS in all categories apart from off-road capabilities and journalists need at least something to justify articles like this )

I don't follow- these are similarly priced, performance-oriented SUVs. X5M will be 30-40% more in NZ than the tested RRS (which was less than the M50d).

Honestly (for me) a more interesting test would've been vs the 50i... But hard to blame them for BMW electing to use a oil burner in their currently-highest performing SUV.

I think, ultimately it will come down to other things than outright performance when choosing between these cars. Either you appreciate the gadgets and the BMW badge, and in most cases more attractive pricing of the BMW. Some will fall for the Badge and the prestige of the Range Rover. Both are fine cars, I will say that the exterior of the Range Rover is more elegant, but the BMW feels much more modern and the infotainment/navigation of the RR feels very 2006.

Agree on infotainment- I'd be driving a RRS if they got the inside as right as the outside.
