F1 Sounds - N/A V8 vs. Turbo 6
If you are a true motorsport fan and you have ever been to a Formula 1 race (pre-2014) … this could be one of the most disappointing videos that you will ever see / hear.
I witnessed two F1 races at IMS and the cars sounded amazing … just like the first clip. Not much to say about the sound of F1 in 2014. I can't wait to see the E9x vs. F8x M3/4 comparisons to hear if the BMW engineers can find some magic for the new turbo cars! PS: in my opinion, pumping digital sounds through the speakers is not magic Last edited by scrammer; 03-20-2014 at 10:35 PM.. |

Sounds like there's a muffler on the V6 cars.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Nice video comparison. This story even made NPR. I could not find the story I originally heard but this one is quite similar ("Why Formula 1 has a sound problem"). And from here,

I agree.
I just posted a V10, V8, and V6T comparison on Australian GP on FB. I was unhappy they went from V10 to V8, and F1 doesn't even have a V8 now..... Comparison between all 3 at Australian GP (Melbourne) 2004 V10 - Ferrari F2004 Schumacher 2013 V8 - Ferrari F2013/F138 Alonso 2014 V6 T - Ferrari F14 T Raikkonen |

One of the biggest reasons I went with a V8 M5 instead of a I6 M3, sound. I'm no race driver, for me there are 4 things that are equally important in a car. Speed, handling, interior, and lastly sound. You just cannot beat the monstrous V8 in the M5, it's even louder than the V8 in the current M3.

Carl,
You don't know what you are talking about. I have both cars, and one is easily twice as loud as the other one (stock vs stock). M5 is so loud that it actually makes the passengers uncomfortable whereas you have to rev the M3 over 5000 rpm to get it remotely close (and it's still nowhere near as loud). |

It is just time to move on to efficiency and speed and get rid of the obnoxious sounds.
If I wants noise, I can listen to the Akra or Thunder headers on my bikes.

Naturally aspirated V8's are becoming extinct, we will have to get used to that annoying 6 inline cylinder engine sound that is similar to a duck choking on a bunch of nuts and bolts.
