Need opinions on plastidip
So I decided to try plastidip for the first time and wanted to get opinions on the results. I think I'm in the middle on it. The nice part is that I can peel it off at anytime. I dipped the orange side markers too since I couldn't find replacements online.
Here are the before and after pictures. |

I think it looks great. I would not do the side yellow reflectors because they actually have a function. But the wheels look great. Nice to change their look once in a while.

I'm interested in the improved appearance from the side markers. What plastidip product did you use?

It's apparently supposed to last up to 3 years and you can wash the wheels. Some people even run it through the car wash but I haven't yet. As far as the dust question I've only had it on for a week and doesn't look very dusty/filthy at all. I'll have to see how that changes as time passes.

Just out of curiosity: are you guys (in US) are legally allowed to paint/plastidip (i.e. basically color change) those side reflectors (and therefore get no fines after you do this)?

It could be noticed when you get an inspection sticker (brake tag for those in New Orleans) but I suppose that is the beauty of being able to peel it off. |

The dark graphite is the only color I actually think the x-line wheels look really good. I think the plasti dip gives them an entirely different look that makes me think if they were a solid color, they'd look good against more paint colors. Seeing these plasti dipped, I would love to see what they would look like in all silver.
That said, on the dark graphite, I like the 2-tone look better. The little bit of silver breaks up all the gray and ties the wheels in with the running boards and window trim very well. The plasti dip just looks more flat and doesn't tie to the paint color as well IMO. Last edited by chrisny; 03-24-2014 at 09:18 AM.. |

Have to disagree here… Why wouldn't traffic cops know the laws they're enforcing? They look for reasons to pull people over as a gateway to catch drunk drivers, people with outstanding warrants, etc.. Of course they know whether reflectors are required or not.

I don't know anything about the plati-dip crap... what I have done in the past was spray the lens with bulldog adhesive (give the next steps something to adhere to) then put some clear coat in a paint gun with a TINT of your color-coded paint in it and spray one to two coats. You don't want it on too thick but it will be clear so the light shines through and you have the color of your car.
