X5 Vibration
Has anyone experience a distinct vibration at approximately 60 MPH?
Starts at 57, intensifies to 60, then slowly fades and is hardly noticeable over 65. My thought at first was the run flats but I'm not so sure. |

I picked mine up on Thursday (30d - UK market). The first thing I noticed was a slight vibration in the steering when I got up to motorway speeds (70mph). Perhaps this is something that will turn out to be a common issue. Anyone else?

I thought of that. The vibration is much more subtle than the lane change warning - and happens even with this disabled

Sounds like a good old wheel balance issue, I'd get the dealer to check it as it is that new, probably just a wheel weight fallen off or not applied quite in the right place.

That sounds like a wheel balance is needed. It is not hard to throw a weight or to have weights put on wrong. It may also be a bent rim but that will be checked at balance. If the symptoms continue, there will be more investigation needed and could relate to bad tire(s)

Just an update, dealer called, at first they thought it was an incorrectly balanced wheel/tire. They checked all four and no such luck!
The top dog in the shop drove it and immediately pegged it for a bad wheel bearing. They were going to perform the swap this afternoon. Results tomorrow. Funny thing is, I was given a Xdrive 528i for a loaner. I swear it has the same issue, exactly at the same speed, 57-64. Hopefully good news tomorrow? |

Just an update, going on a total of 5 days in the shop with no fix.
Changed tires, balenced wheels and tires several times with different machines, BMW Engineers involved. Tried unhooking transfer case, no help, disconnected electric steering assist, no help. More to follow tomorrow. Anyone else feel a "fast frequency" vibration at 56-64? |

So, as another update, another day of "field tests" with no solution.
My dealership is in contact and following protocol of a BMW engineer. Tests include shutting the vehicle off at a higher speed than where the vibration is the greatest and slowing down through the speed, and the vibration still exists. Now BMW is sending an engineer out to review the problem directly. I am not sure when this is going to happen but it should be in the next week or so. My dealership is THE BEST! (Laurel BMW in Westmont, IL) They have been handling this terrifically. My assumption is this is a unique situation and both the dealer and BMW are working towards a resolution, in a timely manor. But, the Warden isn't too happy She is getting pretty upset about it all. |

This is bad news indeed. The new X5 is based on the F10/11 chassis which has been (and still is) plagued with vibration issues since day 1. Sounds like this has been carried over to the X5, unbelievable...

Test drives
I agree, this is the same problem which is coming from the F10/F11. I have done two (2) testdrives with 3 months in between and noticed the exact same vibrations on both cars. I will never buy a car which has these vibrations.... Please let BMW know you don't accept it!

The several f15 cars I drove had no vibration issues. Around 60mph is a tire/wheel issue.
Sorry didn't notice that wheels were changed. Still I don't think its a Common issue. Last edited by kip1; 05-18-2014 at 07:51 AM.. |
