Stock sport suspension vs aftermarket
The OEM parts are on backorder which will hold up repairs from my accident so the body shop asked if maybe Id like to upgrade now and itll be faster so now im looking at tein springs/koni... is it worth it? I may consider eibach or h&r springs but im not looking to really drop my car... more concerned about handling.

What parts of the suspensions are you talking about that are backordered? What parts is the bodyshop replacing? Both front and rear axels?

rear shock/spring... oem is already over $200 which would cover the springs for the whole car...

Eibach + Koni adjustable struts/shocks are a very good set-up. But you'll have to replace springs and shocks at all 4 corners at the same time and not just the rears. If you're planning to keep the car for more than 2 years, get Rogue Engineering rear-shock-mounts at the same time (it'll save you a lot of money and hassles in the long run).
Shox.com is just about the cheapest place you can find for the Eibach springs and Koni struts/shocks package. (no I'm not affiliated with shox.com)

Part #8: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...43&hg=33&fg=45 The stock rear-shock-mounts are known to crack easily with aftermarket suspensions. Heck, they're known to crack easily with STOCK suspensions. The stock ones are just really thin pieces of metals and the aftermarket ones are thicker and stronger. So essentially, if you upgrade the rear-shock-mounts at the same time, you pretty much will never have to worry about them cracking/failing for many many years.

I would imagine so. It's a well known issue for the E46 M3 and the stock RSM I took off from my Z4M looks just as skinny.

I can totally vouch for the eibach, koni suspension setup. To me, the height is just about perfect. Not Tooo low, but just enough to differentiate it from a sport suspension setup. Ride comfort is firmer, but under control. It's nice that the shocks are adjustable so that you can fine-tune ride for comfort/sport.
I didn't replace the Rear Shock Mounts when i swapped suspenions. Now that I think about it, I probably should have had those replaced/upgraded at the same time. It's been a little over a year, and I'm starting to hear some small squeaking sounds from the rear when I go over big bumps. Not sure where exactly it's coming from, but it sort of sounds like the rear shock mount area. Oh well.

Hey Roger,
We should get together sometimes and look at the noises on your car. I fixed my RSM noise by the way. I re-installed the top and bottom RSM metal washers and made sure the top nut was tightened properly and the noises went away. Also, did you remember if Truline re-used the RSM paper gaskets? Apparently, they actually serve a purpose in eliminating little noises. Well if you pick up a set of RSM's I can just help you install them.

That would be cool Eric. I'll have to take you up on your offer when the weather gets a little better
No immediate hurry, as it's not really a bother right now, but eventually I'll plan on changing the RSMs out.

I'm also thinking about getting the Koni/Eibach setup for my car. Do any of you guys know if the 03 to 07 Z4 suspension will fit on my 08 Z4 3.0si coupe?

it should fit as long as you dont get the Z4M suspension components. I dont think the sport suspension vs non-sport is different in terms of aftermarket pieces.

Are there really any differences with the suspension components of the M vs non-M cars? I'd imagine the components are the same, but with stiffer spring rates and shock dampening.

The M cars are also heavier thanks to the iron block and have a different weight distribution.

I'll take your old suspension parts
I have a Z4 coupe without the Sport Package. If anyone with the Sport pack is planning to upgrade their suspensions to an aftermarket system I'd be interested in your old BMW Sport pack parts (particularly the larger diameter sway bars) to upgrade mine. Just let me know. Thanks

My question is, do they use the same suspension type and mounting points? Does anyone have diagrams for the stock suspention for both the M and Roady? Thanks. |
