M specific options were the factory answer to the fake M’s
A while back BMW started creating things like different hoods, fenders, spoilers, roofs, that would make it cost prohibiting to create a fake M.It just seems that now and days they wanted to boost sales for a while by sharing some M car options or components to keep the sales strong. While I agree that dilutes the M brand,it doesn’t dilute the performance of my M4.I really didn’t get it for the image because I think that for the money there are cars that have more of status symbol image.A lot of people don’t know the spread between a 320 and an m3 .People not into cars might think a 528 is higher end vehicle due to the series or size.
Fake M’s don’t really impress the average car consumer so it’s kind of pointless.Bmw always gives the consumer good performance in each model and now you can dial it up with m performance options that fine tune the experience.Having owned Real M models and Msport models,I like both for different applications. You just need to make up your mind in the showroom how much you value performance vs costs so you can drive without that feeling of maybe I bought the wrong model. Something looked off with this M5. Bonus points if you rock 2 different license plates.

Back on topic - I agree to disagree wrt: brand dilution. It's hard to go into my local dealership without tripping over a random M badge. They're so common now, like pennies. When everything is extraordinary (M-badged), then nothing really is. With the current management, it can't be long before the i-brand starts sporting M badges, too.

What's funny about Biermann moving to N?
Biermann WAS the BMW M division when M was dominant and a real, more practical alternative to a Porsche 911. Back in the day, people would ask "what kind of car is that?" referring to a BMW. They wondered what the attraction was for a foreign, compact, quirky, car that was unknown to the masses in N America. If you didn't know, you just didn't. A rational person could argue that there's more M DNA at Hyundai N division today (via Biermann), than there is in Munich.

Q: how have your expectations wrt: M evolved over the years? It's a leading question. Perhaps I'm left-ice cold by BMW today because my perception is that the M concept used to represent a viable, more practical alternative to Porsche. Given that criteria, whether right or wrong, the answer is clear.

Isn't N what naturally comes after M? M now stands for Multimedia, that's why you see it on every BMW, lol. |
