Ticking noise when starting the car

Hi all, I have been getting this ticking noise for a while now when I start the car. I don't know what it is but would like it gone!

I used to have the problem like in this thread:

(basically a constant ticking noise when driving that increases with engine speed, and I got rid of that by going on a long trip and haven't had it since

However, now I only get the ticking when I start the car. It happens immediately once the engine turns over. It is only for about half a second, and about 10 or so clicks in that time. Then it is gone.

Any idea what this is or what is causing it?

Just a quick update, the ticking is back. So I guess hearing it as i started the car just precedes the ticking when driving. Oh well, at least I know how to get rid of it.

It's the lifter in your engine, it is a common N52/N51 problem, I had it replaced under BMW warranty.

I just blasted it on the highway for a few miles and it went away. ever since you had yours replaced, driving as you did before, did the ticking happen again?
